Freshwater sponges

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some types will go for years without a problem, a teacher I had kept some in a cool water tank with mudfish and killies, his were an encrusting type. Most are small, an inch or two but at least one can reach more than 3 feet long, I think that one is a cold water, clear lake species. Her are pics from various sources of some different types, They are from several places including New Zealand, Canada, Georgia, and Alabama. The one with the zebra mussels is from Lake Erie.

I didn't see that they had mudpuppies (my Mom might not let me have one but it's worth a try) I don't have the tank space fo LMBs or channels. I'll have to look on this site some more.:)

FYI, there are at least 15 species of sponge found in Wisconsin. They tend to be small, 1-3", encrusting, and drab.

Not off hand and I don't have access to the university database there thoughif you try your local college they will usually let non-students coppy from their reference works or contact
Science Information Services, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
and ask what publications to check for info on local sponges, such departments are usually quite helpful.

Some was curiosity when I found some in a lake, so I looked them up, some was from an aquaculture course, and a lot is on line. I have a head full of useless information, lol.
