I've kept a FW lionfish (toadfish) before... Best to keep in brackish water. Nocturnal voracious eater. Tankmates I kept with were various polypterus species, payara, and Rhaphioidon vulpinus. Had it feeding on raw shrimp, sinking carnivore pellets, chopped earthworms, live & frozen fish. :)

I have 2 that I keep in a 4' aquaria freshwater with a few young niger and granulosus cats.

They have been in freshwater for the 3 years that I have owned them and eat prawns, worms and whitebait.

Bought from Wharf Aquatics who also kept them in freshwater.

just dont put them with any fish you like cause i had two for two days and they ate a gsp puffer and a columbian shark. cool as hell but they eat pretty much anything that cross their path

Please explain yourself. Which toadfish are you talking about? Why should they never be kept in fresh?
these fish should be kept in salt water. no one knows what the hell is going on with these fish. the parent fish come out of salt water into fresh/brackish etuaries to spawn (just like salmon) heres the good part pay attention closely, when the babys hatch in fresh or brackish water people come and catch them and never acclimate them like they should be. they last 1-1.5 yrs. in a brackish water aquarium.

I'm confused now

You say they should be kept in salt, then say no one knows what is going on with these fish. So you mean no-one knows if they should be salt, brack or fresh?

They catch the babies and then don't acclimatise them properly to what? Farleys rusks?

I have recently purchesed a freshwater stone fish and i was just wondering:

what fish i can keep him with (please give me an exaple of the fish aswell) ,what to feed him and how big will he grow

thanks
I used to keep Halophyyne Trispinosus (aka Toadfish) in the late 70's and early through mid 80's and always had total success with them. Mine never got any larger than about 5 inches. Each time I had one I kept them in a ten gallon tank. I had great luck with the larger fresh water butterfly fish I kept with them and would assume that was because they always stayed on top and the HT often picked out a little cave type place to hang out. The really cool thing about them were when they would growl... it was a strange noise that would rattle the fishtank to a small degree but it was definitely audible. I always fed normal canned fish food, brine shrimp, they will eat guppies basically they're pretty much like most fish. If they can get it in their mouth they will eat it! so beware. I'm pretty sure I lost a Betta to one once. As far as the brackish thing thats mumbo jumbo... I had one for at least 4 years and the other for ages and i didn't keep any brackish/semi-brackish water. many fish benefit from the addition of some aquarium salt but I never did. The main thing I can say I always made sure my biological base was well established before I added any fish I had doubts about.

I never see them around anymore or like to get another and Ive even asked at your local shops here around Dallas / Fort Worth. I suggest you get you one and enjoy it they can be happy and health with no more care than you would give an oscar... but dont expect them to have the personality of an oscar... The noise they make is like no other and it means they are happy happy... :headbang2

Hey everyone, I know this thread is a little old but I am confused. I have a Batrachomoeus trispinosus. Same as this fish: http://www.petsolutions.com/Freshwater-Lionfish+I68200+C79.aspx
I have had it for a couple months now in complete freshwater. I feed him frozen silversides once a day he loves them.(Is this enough food?)

So should I put him in brackish water? I only have 1 aquarium at the moment which is a 29 gallon. I also have a small pleco and 3 convict cichlids. He doesn't bother them at all but I don't think I can add salt to my tank with these other tank mates.
He's about 7 inches long and seems to be pretty healthy but I don't want to lose him over something stupid.

I am reading mixed things, keep in fresh, only keep in brackish. Thanks for your time everyone!
