Funny things 'bout your Oscars behavior

I read one tread about funny behavior, but there must be more story's. These fish are so weird and funny. Here are my stories:


I had a lot of things to install in the fishtank so I put the Oscars in a bucket. A few minutes later, one of them is laying on his side on the bottom. I quickly change water, and again he's laying on his side. Nothing was wrong, he was just resting :S

Late in the evening I find one Oscar lying on its belly on the bottom of the tank, sleeping.

Another time I change some water, both Oscars lay down on there belly sides against each other. I had it on tape but accidentally deleted it, to bad it was a very funny view.

I see them laying around often, as If they get tired of swimming.

Also one time I had a hose hanging above the tank, one oscar starts jumping up out of the water to bite it.

I love them, after only a few days of owning them I think they got to be one of the most interesting freshwater fish out there, they're not your typical shy fish that gets frightened whenever you get too close. I sit in front of the tank for like half an hour a few times during the day just to see what they doing

Mine swim together most of the time, eat directly from my hand, beg for food whenever I'm close, and hunt live food like a pack of wolves lol... I drop a handful of ghost shrimp and they start chasing them around the tank until they finally corner a single shrimp and eat it, then they go after the rest until there's none.

They also show no fear whatsoever to the recently introduced crayfish, at first they did, but now they seem to have learned that these crayfish can't really hurt em, so one of them will come and poke a cray and pull back... then the rest start poking the cray from the back/sides until the poor thing just can't handle it and goes hiding

As far as aggression goes... mine are faaaar from mature (around 3 inches) but they show no interest in any other fish unless it's small enough to be swallowed whole. They will poke a pleco every now and then but it's more of a "are u food?" type of poke and they immediately cease. They're definitely not an aggressive/bully type of cichlid, I just think people mistake their appetite for aggression.

Overall it's a really smart and fun fish that everyone should try at least once.

They usually lay on their sides when they feel stressed. But sometimes they sleep that way too. Mine sleeps adrift in the current and bonks into things.

a petty funny story i have is once i dident feed him for around 2 days so he was VERY HUNGRY so before i could put in some pellets he jumped out of the water, grabbed my fingers, and i nearly pulled him right out of the tank

if your oscars are lying down on the bottom that is not resting. it is a sign that your oscar is stressed. (bad water quality, aggression from each other, too small of a tank, etc.)

but as for funny behavior, i used to have a few oscars that i taught to jump out of water for food. And i had one that would let me pet it. (it actually seemed to enjoy it)
