Has anyone here caught one? I have never heard of them before tonight.
I went fishing in Port A Texas and my friend caught a 19 and 24"
Gaftop. They are awesome looking to
the point that they scare me.
I caught one to a monster at 10" :irked:

I heard they are good to eat has anyone eatten them before?

Ive never eaten one but they are edible unlike the hardhead cat you catch so many of in the Gulf. The gaftop are also called sailcats and are a really interesting looking fish for sure!

I haven't caught one myself but a guy I was fishing next too caught one in the 20"-24" range. Ive read that they prefer live bait over dead. My gf ate one before and said it was very good. As for the hardhead goes ive heard mixed opinions, some love others hate it.

I have caught them many times here and they are a great catch. Most people I know hate catching them, but I really like them because I have eaten them and know how good they are. The biggest ones I have caught were 36", put up a great fight at that size and also made for a great meal.

someone should keep them as pets itd be BA

I've caught many gaftops on live and dead bait. I enjoy eating them as well.
IMO there flesh is the tastiest of all the species of catfish I've eaten (blue, channel, flathead, basa).

I've never eaten hardhead. Not afraid to try it but I think the biggest thing against eating them is that 99% of them you catch are hardly big enough to bother cleaning.

5lbs + gaftops are a dime a dozen on a good day in Galveston lol.

The really cool thing about the sail cats is the males brood their eggs in his mouth and the eggs are huge as are the fry. It would be very cool to have some for a tank.

My dad was stung by one before, said it was one of the most painful injuries he's ever had.
