thanks for the info ... was sold to me as a gar :(

Gar is a common name which does not actually mean that the fish is a "GAR" I.E a Lepisosteid fish... Certain Tetras, Flying fishes and even a Gourami like fish are common named Gar. So yeah it was sold to you as a gar and they where not deceitful in saying so.... but it is not one.

Common names are useless in most cases for fish ID..

I picked up one of these guys last week. About 5 inches. It's got that little extra tail above the dorsal fin and is almost grayscale in color. It's got a silver body, dark black stripe, and black spotting on the fins. I'll try and get a pic tomorrow. I know it's not a florida because I have a florida right next to it in the tank.

For some reason it won't let me quote it, but it's just like the one halfway down on page 6.

Yup, that's Florida gar that's displaying its juvenile coloration.

You're 100%? It just seems so much different than my florida. Here's a much better picture I found of what I have. They were labeled shortnose.

Yes, I am 100% sure that it is a Florida gar. They can be pretty variable when they're young (although that can't be used to ID them), and Florida gars are the most commonly available gars in the trade and are often passed off as other gars. In fact, it looks very much like the farmed Florida gars that I have seen available as of late.

Hi guys. I bought a new Gar. Seller says it's Spotted gar (Lepisosteus ocelatus). Is this true? Really it's Spotted gar? Or is it another type of Gar? Thank you for your reply. The size of fish in the picture: 10-12 cm (3.9 - 4.7 ")

Looks like a Florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus) to me.
