thanks for the the helpful info... time to the the hardware store and find some fish safe silicone. the stuff sold at pet stores is ridiculously expensive...

i am curious though, wouldn't a quality, cycled filter remove the chemicals and ammonia that ge silicone II w/ bio-seal leaches out? one would assume that a proper working filter and frequent water changes would address these potential problem... no?

If you let it cure the proper amount of time there will be no ammonia or acetic acid released. And no the bio seal means that there is mold and mildew inhibitors in the silicone that the product will release for a very long time stopping any bacterial growth at all as well as undetermined harmful side effects to your fish from long term exposure.

okay lemme clear things up.

bio seal is a silicone with fungicides prevents mold, mildew and fungus.(aka breeding grounds for unwanted bacteria in high moisture environment).

also last time i checked silicone did not contain ammonia.

water only affects silsicone in the following ways.

dilutes the acetic acid which prevents the silicone from ever curing properly (that also means that the silicone is never as strong.)

prevents it from sticking to the glass.

this bio seal may prevent your filter from cycling suceesfully.(not too sure)
but more importantly it affects your fish ask your self what would happen if you were in a field and you were constanly being crop dusted not only would anychildren you have be mutants(not sure if funicides do that)
but you'd have a much shorter life expectancy.

He's talking about the different cure types.

Silicone I off gases acetic acid while curing. The vinegar smell (people wouldn't use proper ventilation with this product and the acids caused health problems).

Silicone II off gases ammonia while curing. The ammonia small (you can't stay in a room with it, hence the use). (note II is about 80% as strong as the original I).

If Silicone II is only 80% as strong as Silicone I it certainly shouldn't be used, especially considering the bioseal question.
