i was wondering if these giants were illegal in California :stingray:? Because awkwardly, i saw 2 for sale, for $200 each :werd:? I'm just curious... :lol3:

they were most likly salt water rays, the giant ones from thailand and australia i believe are endangered, and no all freshwater rays are illegal in cali

that's what i was thinking, they may be saltwater, but they were in their big freshwater holding tanks, and they have been there for about a week now... i searche din the net, and this is what i found that is practically the same looking as the ones at the store....

all of these resemble the 2 there at the fish store...

Do you really think you can accommodate them for a lifetime? I don't think they are illegal to possess but think before you want one.

See this video.

More facts. Their status may be considered endangered. I would not encourage buying them if their number has in fact dwindled as this encourages flourishing of illegal activities such as poaching.

Stingray numbers appear to have dropped dramatically in recent years as their riverine habitats have degraded, and it appears they no longer inhabit some parts of their historical range. Large stingrays have been known to pull boats upstream and even underwater.

There is one legal species, teacup I think?

Either way, if they are fw rays, you should report the store, ESPECIALLY if they are endangered and considering they are for sale.

There's a "small" Himantura sp. ray available on the market lately. It grows to 41" so, only a very large, heavily aerated (They come from areas with fast moving water and currents), ultra filtered (in FW, these rays absorb alot of water and expel alot of urea) system has any real chance of maintaining these rays properly.

oh dang! nice video Lupin, yea i wasn't even thinking of buying it... that's crazy! but i just wonder whoever buys em, will care for it... but anyweiz, got myself 2 monsters today, at the store, a clown knife 7"-8" and a koi 9"-10" for my pond :D beautiful fish!

'Teacup' is a size of a rays disc. However, the retic is commonly sold as a teacup. Retics are members of Potamotrygonidae and thus illegal in CA.

And, BTW, some Dasyatid (eg: sabina) and some Himantura (eg: bleekeri) rays can be maintained in, and are sold as, FW and are NOT on CAs restricted species list.

yea i bet it was the atantic stingray, they are sopose to be salt water but they can tolorate freshwater, however thier urin output goes up x10, thus making them very dificult to keep in freshwater because you need to keep them in such large aquariums and do large water changes... if an average stingray needs a 300 gallon tank.... you are looking at a 3,000 gallon tank, or you can just keep it in salt water..... which is alot better for the animal
