jack daniel i recommend 3/8 or 1/4 thick glass. 3/8 is your best bet but i have seen tanks with 1/4 before. bbrtmad i recommend you use acrylic for that thickness. but you can use glass if you wish. if you do you can use either temeperd or float or laminate. wired is pretty crap.

Heya. Thank you for this thread. I've read through the whole thing, but since my dimensions are slightly wacky, i didn't see anything about it.

I want to build a tank that's either 8' or 6' long. (doesn't matter which. just concerned about overall glass integrity) I like the look of larger tanks. Not longer, but larger, meaning higher and more depth. So i was thinking 48" high, but everyone i tell that too really wants to punch me in the face. Nobody approves (even though i've seen 48" high tanks with 1/2" tempered)

Anyway, what do you recommend for a 8'x40"x40" tank? I say 40" because it's more stable than 48" and probably would keep the cost of glass down.

Also what do you feel i'd be ok with as my maximum height and depth for a 1/2" piece of glass on an 8' tank? (I'd frame the front w/ 2x4"s or even 2x6"s and of course have cross bracing.)

also a second question: is 1/2" tempered typically cheaper than 3/4" plate? which is typically stronger?

i dotn deal with tempered. it isnt good for making tnaks. i would say you need atleast 1" thick glass for that. if you wnt down to 40x36" you could use 3/4" plate. hope that helps!

Max height of 1/2" is as tall as you want its the height and width combined that counts.

awesome. ty for the reply.

so you think 40x36 is a better size. 40x40 isn't smart either?

The above tank is 8x3x2 with 1/2" glass. You got all the necesary views in terms of bracing and all that.

It is done and cycling (awaiting residents).

temperd may be more shatter proof but it cannot handle any bowing.

also the 8x3x2 bracing positioning is good but, i would use way thicker glass. that seems to be6mm i woulkd use 10 or 12.
