yeah before my impeller broke i was running mech filtration on one side of my penguin and then on the other side had a little bag full of ceramic rings (bought from petco came in really convenient little mesh bag, i think it was meant for canisters or something but it fit perfectly in the one side of my 350)

I have ceramic rings in my penguin 330s inside the media baskets because they don't sell the bio-wheel bracket for the filter anymore

A couple of threads you might want to read.Going without carbon is fine IMO,but the filters you are using, probably do not need any more bio.

This is what I use in my 350.I know I just posted articles disputing overdoing bio filtration, but the reason I use these is to hold the filter pad.

I don't buy the "wastetraps" they are just filter pads with carbon.I buy this, http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=5277 ,cut it to fit in the cartridge, stuff it in(it's tight),and use them until the fall apart. It lasts for months.I rinse the whole cartridge with the pad in it every couple weeks in tank water in a bucket, and check to make sure the pad has not fallen apart.
Doing this gives you no reason to buy Marineland's replacement cartridges, which are a waste of money,IMO.

I saw a few threads on our Bio obsession. Must admit, they really got into my head. Did a few tests, removing Bio media from canisters and testing. After a month my cans had less than half the Bio media they had with no effect on the tanks water quality.
Since the OP was about a Bio Wheel filter system was wondering, why were you looking to increase your media. Was your water not up to spec.???

I wish I had read some of the stickied threads before I made this one, but I've been reading through them and picking up a lot of good information.

I've got pot scrubbies in everything now. Got em in my AC110s, my Penguin 350 and even put them in this small Tetra whisper filter I got for a 10-15 gallon tank. The AC110s are now running the stock sponge, six pot scrubies and then the ceramic rings on top of that. I'm also going to look into that bio-media insert for my Penguin 350, I really like how that is designed. Thanks again everyone for your help.
