55W on a 180? Wow, thats sterile water! It sounds like there is a lot of unused tank space, though. With those params and water change schedule, I wonder how they would do with discus?
Correct use of a UV hasn't got much to do with the size of the tank but has a lot to do with the flow rate going through the UV I like to turn over the UV 1.5 times the tank volume per hour so 55w on 450-500 l/ph of flow is about right for the 180 which is 630 liters about.

Discus are a blackwater fish, Nuggets are a whitewater fish.

Wild Discus (and that's my thing I loath domestic Discus) do best at a lower PH of around 5.5 and 30-31c

Wow, thats good to know about the UV. I have an 8 watt(on a 220), but it is just to keep the water clear (not green).

So, what does that mean about the nuggets? They can't be kept with driftwood? I never realized that blackwater and whitewater made that much of a difference, although I realize that some fish prefer one or the other.

Your 8w UV would be acting in a UVC (Clarifying) role rather then a UVS (Sterilization) role in your 220 if the flow was anything higher then about 20gph which as you mention is ok for defeating green water algae but isn't even close to sterilizing the water of pathogens. I'd recommend a minimum 72w UV at a flow of about 180gph for a 220g tank if UVS performance was required.

Most nuggets do well in Driftwood but the water should be clear (tannin free hence the high use of ion exchange resins) and the PH slightly higher then a classic blackwater set up ie: 6.5-6.8

Ummmm ....
I upped the temp
Changed the diet to more veggies and massive feeding (had to increase to daily 30% WC's)

I now have a male nugget sitting on about 70 eggs
