It a genetic condition similiar to xanthochroism where all colors are lacking except for Yellow and orange. Interestingly this condition in gars can be influenced by hormonal and enviornmental conditions. There have been Normal colored fish that have turned Xanthic and Xanthic fish that have turned normal or become piebald with black blotches.

xanthochroism can occur in all seven species of gar.
