GOONCH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Goonch cats can live 90+ years. They are a very slow growing fish. There aggression level isnt too high, but any other goonch keeper on here will tell you if they are feeding live (i feed mine live and pellets) the goonch is like lightning and the fish feeder will disappear in the blink on an eye. I have seen my goonch devour 5 feeders in a row hitting each like lightning. It will wait till the fish is near the head and then its game over. My goonch tends to be lazy and likes to lounge on his plants. I have also temporarily raised the temperature to 78-79 degrees to speed up its metabolism a little bit until it reaches about a foot.

i couldnt agree more, environment plays a big factor, but instinct is still there, and with tigers, if it comes out 1% of the time, that has some serious consequences for whomever is near that thing

on goonches, my 2 stay relatively still, however during feeding time you can see they mean business.... fast swimming, explosive strikes .... all my other fish move to the top of the tank out of the way when these guys go on the prowl.... they are such sleek and smooth swimmers, and not a single pellet escapes their patrol... one comes to the surface when he hears the top open and i can drop pellets into his mouth, but i'm always nervous cause my hand is 1 inch from his mouth, and being 20 inches with some serious teeth he could def cut my finger good, and it has been close when he's really hungry! they are unique and awesome fish

How long did it take to reach 20 inches? What size did you get it at?

Yeah I was talking bout petting the goonch..
That's a good point,instinct IS built in!
Are they know for biting keepers hands?
Like you said nothing is %100 ether way...
It's sux not having 1,and I wanted 1 of these guys long before river monsters showed everyone,u guys r lucky..
I often see on YouTube and other fishy sites, they seem to always be kept alone!
Is this because they like a lower temp,or they hammer tank mates?

Nope :) i keep mine with a juvenile wc Colombian Oscar a silver gourami and a alligator gar. Im planning on buying another goonch as soon as I get my 90 gallon in next week! As far as "petting" is concerned i have only touched from the dorsal fin back. If you ever see these guys eat you will have enough sense to not put anything near the sides of there head.

It'd be nice to hear from more keepers. All I speak of is from reading around. Never kept one.

Again, from reading, it sounds mostly because they like certain and demanding water conditions. They can kill any tankmate, potentially, and grow to enormous size - another two but weaker reasons, since we are generalizing (always dangerous though). But I do see lots in community tanks.

Excactly my impression too. They are lazy and slow and wait for prey to come by closer but when they strike, it is lightning fast.

where do they sell goonches right now?

To me they are the holy grail, and sadly ill never own 1..
The closest i get to em,is a flick or a youtube vid or some text book info, and most of the info is the same too, just spread out over different sites!
Id prefer hearing from keepers talking from personal point of view aswell

i wouldnt get too used to your goonches being lazy.... i consider this a quick warning to goonch keepers out there..... mine were the most docile fish, except when they struck to eat, or when the lights when out and they started patroling the tank.... but they never attacked a tankmate.... they were growing at a rapid pace, especially since i moved them into my big tank about 2 months ago, then things took a turn for the worst.... the larger goonch, probably an inch or 2 shy of 2 feet, started really becoming very active and then ate a 6 inch datnoid, which is not an easy fish to eat.... i believed he went after this fish cause he was weakened by starvation trying to pellet/frozen food feed .... i've never ever fed either of my goonches live, hoping this would keep them from eating tank mates.... well you cant totally defeat instinct.... i still had hopes that he wouldnt eat anyone else, but about 2 weeks later he ate an 8-9 inch golby ..... i moved both goonches into a separate 220 gallon and the aggression hasnt stopped... they jocky for position in front of a powerhead i have on the bottom of the tank, the larger one ramming the smaller out of the way... .they dont bite, but they smash into eachother really hard, spraying gravel, and dislodging very large and heavy driftwood.... kinda scared to see what their like at 3 feet! i still love them, dont get me wrong, its just a warning to other goonch keepers out there... now i'm powerfeeding everyone in the big tank so they get large enough that i can reintroduce the goonches in 6 months to a year hopefully
