Been thinking of changing the gravel in our tank. in an earlier post some one said i should look at the garden center for some large rocks to put in my tank for my cichlids to hide behind. So that got me to thinking about the gravel. If I bought gravel in the bags from home depot or somewhere like that i would save a ton of money. What do yall think of that? Is this a good idea or am I asking for trouble.

I've used the smaller size pea gravel from there and it works fine.

I've used their pea gravel for years. You just need to rinse it really well as it will cloud your water. Can't beat $3 for a 60lb bag...

ive been using it in my tank for 3 years and works great...no problems at all..big money saver...just make sure to rinse the gravel well...

Thanks guys that is what i was thinking. I always wash gravel really well just to make sure anything loose gets washed off. the current color is blue which I hate. i let my 5 year old pick it out. bad idea lol.

It is a great money saver. Rinse. Rinse. And rinse again.

Thanks guys i got a bag last night and I also found some really cool flagstone pieces that i picked up cheap for some nice structures for the tank.

I agree. It's all I've ever used and it's super cheap.

Gravel from a home center will be fine, but as mentioned, you will need to rinse it many times to get it clean. You will also notice a difference when you gravel vac. The tube does not go into the gravel as smoothly, and more gravel seems to get stuck, but it is not a huge deal. I used it in one of my 125's and it saved me a pant load.
