they get bigger than most oscars, but in terms of aggression and such, they should be close to ideal tankmates

Yeah, I wasn't comparing eventual size, just growth rate. Mainly that first year spurt they both have.

I have decided I'm going to impulse buy cichlids I know are allright. As this is a bit hard, oscar gettin pissy GTs gettin pissy,baysnooks being over sized pussys
 
Huh? Those fish will work just fine. My snook is in with a 10" jag and smaller uro, among others. They're not complete wusses, you just don't want to surround them with a group of aggressors. Oscars and gt are not crazy aggressors. 1 in 10 maybe, but there are geos like that, too.
 
as far as non cichlids go, a lima shovelnose catfish would be good. Bichirs are nice as well.

Well I think i'll go with some Uaru F, some threadfin acaras, and some geophagus surinamensis.
