HELP! DIY Background Problem

Ok guys, I decided to a custom background using driftwood and great stuff. Everything is locked into place but when i start to paint on my quickrete it I cant get good coverage. It just beads up and rolls off. I'm assuming it's because the greatstuff has a smooth waterproof surface, but other guides have used it and applied cement no problems. I didn't use an acrylic fortifier so I'm not sure if that would help any. This is my first go at it. Assistance is greatly appreciated.

Put some sort of primer on first.
 
I would just suggest turning the thing on its side so gravity holds it in place until it dries.

well it is flat when i apply the concrete. it's just that brushing the cement on is like putting water on a duck's back. the foam seems to just repel it. i wanted a soupy first layer to cover all the crevices. i'll see about that primer
 
maybe try roughing it up then..tear off that glossy surface of the stuff
 
i suggest to try to sand it, never done it but it would probably get rid of the gloss and create a surface the cement can stick to
get some medium grade sandpaper and rough it up

Ok, i'll give that a go. Reading all the guides on the net I figured the great stuff would function just like foam pieces. I'm gonna try the acrylic fortifier too, it says it helps with surface bonding.
