Hi everyone,

I have a 3 inch (approximate) FH, it's a ZZ Red Dragon and he will not eat pellets. When I first introduced him to the 55 Gallon he would attempt to try for pellets but would eventually spit them out and lose interest. I tried Chingmix, Grand Sumo, and Blood Parrot pellets, all are a no go.

Note: my FH does eat, he loves blood worms and dried shrimp. also I tried soaking the pellets in water to soften them up before feeding and still he gives it a try and loses interest.

Any techniques to get him to eat them pellets?

Thanks in advance!

or you can try the BW trick.....it has worked for me....Let him eat as many BW as he can.....then wait a day or two and give him pellets...he wont be able to refuse them.

I have the same problem with my zz he eats them but spits most of it out , and loves shrimp. So I too will not feed him for two days.
my p bass did the same thing so I didnt feed him for 2 or 3 days no he loves pellets.

Note: my FH does eat, he loves blood worms and dried shrimp.

Which is precisely why it won't eat pellets. Stop feeding all other foods, wait a couple of days & then feed him pellets soaked in bloodworm juice.
After a few days of that start reducing the BW juice, and after a few more days just feed the dry pellets. The more "options" that you give some fish, the more pickier they become until the point where they have trained you.

alright, so it's been a while since an update and it's still a no go. My flowerhorn is still not eating. I tried the methods provided above and nothing seems to work. The water condition is fine, no sign of disease. He is starting to lose a lot of color and pearls (could be from not eating). I would say it's been a week+ since I last fed him bloodworms (which is the only thing he eats). What should I do? flush him down the toilet? (joking)

Does he poop? If so, what color is it.

Well his poop used to be clear or white a while back, which could be the reason he stopped accepting pellets because originally when I got him he ate. Anyways, I treated that with Metronidazole, thinking it might be an internal parasite. Now his poop looks to be dark grey. Could he still have internal parasite?

What I am curious is that when I drop the pellets in the tank, he does take the initiative to swim up to see whats good to eat. But then he quickly loses interest and just swims around.
