Help my arowana is dying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to be a downer here, but I don't see a small aro living through a nitrogen cycle, once the ammonia spike comes he'll be lucky to make it through that. Pops is giving you advice to keep the water where he'll be ok, but you'll have to do it everyday due to lack of beneficial bacteria and it'll get old quick for you most likely. And most people start with a 55 for a aro and find that's to small within a few months. I got one the 6-7" and within 7 months it grew to 14-16".

If I were you at this time, I would buy the API freshwater test kit to monitor ammonia and nitrite, at minimum. Buy Seachem Prime and dose as directed to help neutralize the toxins while your tank cycles.

In the meantime read up on nitrogen cycle and start planning for a larger tank. Come back and ask questions.

Pops I'm sure you guys made mistake in this hobby when you first started, everyone do. Next time save as much water from the old tank and transfer it to the new tank use the old filter pad and media too. You can set up new tanks off of one tank that cycle already. Glad it fine now.

There's really no reason to save water from old tank. Simply use the filter media from the established tank. The amount of bacteria in the water itself, is not so much. Better to use clean water.
