Hemiodus anyone? Hemiodontidae (Show your fish)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The new fish arrived safe and sound. They were larger than expected and thin from all their journeys. Instead of a 20gal quarantine they were set directly into the 55gal. The flash added the green stripe on their sides, a feature which is not really there.

Love all these fish. Really elegant, gentle fish. If anyone wants a rare one, Tangled Up In Cichlids has Hemiodus vorderwinkleri!! Too rich for me, would love a 90G with a group of these!

I have seen them listed in TUIC, and have seen internet pictures. Absolutely beautiful fish! Would love to get some sometime, but they are always very pricy and unfortunately I don’t have tank space for that kind of fish for now. They would require a whole new large tank. Very tempting, however. You got Hemiodus now?

The H. vorderwinkleri sure look interesting. Probably would have been similar in size to H. gracilis. Hopefully whoever buys them will give a report on their experiences here on your thread!
.
The Hemiodus I purchased last fall have been doing well. Two were lost due to injuries, but seven remain. The largest are now similar in size to the silver dollars. I suppose they are the females.

Chet E - Your new Hemiodus (last fall) are looking beautiful!
Mines are doing well too (originally x4), but I lost one to a filter mis-working The intake fell off and a small Hemiodus got sucked-in and crushed. A stupid mistake. I have to take new pictures of them.
How are your new Argonectes?
Also, how large/how old are your tiger silver dollars? I have four of them who came very small and have grown quite a bit . Finally is has become clear that I have 3 males and 1 female. However, none of the males have yet shown the red humeral spot that it is characteristic of them and which yours show quite noticeably (at least 2 of them).
Cheers!

The Tiger SD's have been with me since January 2015. They were half dollers back then. It's not easy to find the males. The red anal fins are a selling point I guess. I feel like mine should be larger for their age, but then I'm kinda glad they're on the small side. About 4"SL. I took a lot of pictures to get a few good ones. I was amazed to see neither female wanted to be famous this time around. There are two of each. It's nice to have both to see the males color up for their ladies.
.
You've posted some nice pictures elsewhere of your spotted Metynnis. Those males really get handsome.
.
I'm thinking of starting a thread for the Argonectes. I have some nice pictures and experiences to share which may be too off topic here. They have a lot of personality and are doing well.

In a previous post, Nov. 12, 2021, and still today there is a significant difference in the size of some of my Hemiodus. There are three which have smoother skin (smaller scales). One is about twice as large as the other two. My Thought is that the size difference may be gender based. But perhaps the smaller ones just aren't getting enough food. I believe the difference is too much to be just a gender difference. Yesterday I moved the smaller ones into a calmer aquarium in order to try to get better nutrition to them.
.
Some of your fish appear to be this same species. Have you noticed there are some which remain smaller or don't grow as fast?
