HOB vs sponge filtration in 55 gallon tanks with fry

Thanks its an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey. He passed away a couple years ago but I am in the early stages of starting a breeding program. I've done a lot of research on them and have found a good breeder. Hopefully it will work out. I've made a blog with some details. http://www.etnac.com/jack.htm Ive raised a few severums too. They are great parents. Rams are also one of my favorites. Never had them to breed thou. Keep me posted.

I am sorry to hear about your EBJD. He is very pretty. You must have been very lucky and proud. Good luck with the breeding program. Hopefully you'll get lots of pretty fry. I have only seen one EBJD in person and he was gorgeous, but the store he was in wanted $36 for him at 4" long. I passed. Plus I have never been one for the higher level aggressive types of cichlids.

I have had my rams successfully breed a few times now. Unfortunately I think I have one of those bad parent pairs. They don't seem to care too much for the fry. Plus the tank mates they are in with eat the young once they wander away from their parents or vice versa. I have managed to catch some of the fry and keep them within the tank, but in a fine mesh breeding basket. Once they reach .25-.5" long, I move them to my girlfriend's 20 gallon with lots of fake plants densely packed. There is only a betta and 10 neons in there, so most of them survive. All I have been able to catch and keep alive until 1" long when my LFS will accept them is about 12. I am hoping that moving the severums out will increase my number of survivors.

I am most interested in getting my sevs to breed. They are just starting to color up at about 3-4", but they are turquoise severum. Had to get them from Jeff Rapps at Tangled Up In Cichlids all the way in New Jersey. No one has ever seen them locally. I already have one of my LFSs an hour away offer me $4 each once the fry get to about 2" if I can get them to breed. They are still small and immature, so I probably am still several months away from a potential pairing if I get one (fingers crossed).

IF IT were ME I would use sponge filters ONLY ON THE FRY TANK... AND USE AIR POWER ONLY.... but thats me... you will probably be ok with hob ...provided you use a pre- filter... GOOD LUCK.....:)

I am turning my girlfriend's 20 high into a fry only tank. I will be using a 40 gallon rated sponge filter on it and that is all. I will use a HOB with pre filter and a separate sponge filter in both the ram and the severum tanks. I will likely leave the severum fry in with their parents until they are about 0.5-1" long and the parents are looking to spawn again. The ram fry will be kept in a mesh breeder box inside the tank until they are hardy enough to be moved to the fry tank with the severum fry.

I had plans to use an extra 55 gallon tank for a group of geo tapajos, but I am considering using it as a fry tank. I could use just 2 sponge filters and use a divider to keep different sized fry separated so I don't end up missing some.
