How big does a sun catfish grow?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I own one around 9-10" (guessing, never took him out to measure him) and it's 2-3 years old. Hides all the time, but somehow always manages to have a huge belly.

i also recently bought a sun catfish. The petstore from where i bought the fish doesn't even know what it is. They told it's a ID shark. It always hide somewhere in the tank.

i have 3 sunspot cats. they r kinda slow growers but the do max out at 18 inches. make sure they have slightly elevated flat rocks for them to hide under. the cichlids will out grow them and kill them if you dont. good luck and you will have some very nice looking catfish in about 2 or 3 years.

When I had one it hid all the time, except when it was food time, and then it would eat massive amounts of food for a fish it's size.

I got rid of it because I only saw it while it was eating and it was eating a LOT of food for a 5" fish. It was really pretty though.

As others have said, 12" is probably about as big as they get.

My Sun Cats are great :D. They are such cool fish. I have 1 of mine for 4 years and the other for 1. The biggest is about 7''. They may look like they wouldnt really eat decent sized fish but.... Mine was 6'' and he ate my 2 1/2'' Mbuna cichlid!
