Post your Odoe's size by replying to this thread
Howdy,
I've been reviewing the literature on Hepsetus odoe, and noticed a broad range of max sizes being reported. I thought I'd poll MFK and see what tankbusters are in our waters.
First, some primary literature with similar info:
- Winemiller and Kelso-Winemiller (1994) reported up to 350mm (13.8'') out of 185 odoe caught over 7 months in the Zambesi River floodplain
- Adedokun and Fawole (2012) reported up to 390mm (15.4'') out of 133 odoe caught over 12 months in Oba Reservoir (Idekun, Omoogun, Eeguno, Akanbi and Yakun rivers)
In the secondary literature, we find different sizes, with no detail on location
- Riehl, Baensch: Mergus Aquarien Atlas: [no reference] 350mm (13.8'')
- Christian Leveque: Biodiversity dynamics and conservation:[no reference] males 370mm (14.6''), females 470mm (18.5'')
- Paul Skelton: A Complete Guide to the Freshwater Fishes of Southern Africa: [no reference] 470mm (18.5'')
- Mark Phillip Smith: Tetras and other Characins: Everything about history, setting up an aquarium: [no reference]: 700mm (27.6'')
- Tim Berra, Freshwater Fish Distribution [referring to C. Lévêque, D. Paugy and G.G. Teugels, Faune des poissons d'eaux douces et saumâtres de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. 1990]: 700mm (27.6'')
I am also calling on the THF subscribers to access the THF archive. 2009 Volume 57, Issues 7-9 has 5 pages on H. odoe that I haven't reviewed, yet (please PM me)
Now, take these sizes with a grain of salt considering Hepsetus Odoe was just revised by Decru, Vreven and Snoeks. They propose it's three different species in Lower Guinea alone:
- H. akawo
- H. lineata
- H. kingsleyae sp. nov.
But that's right now all besides the point. I am wondering about what's max in our hobby, no matter what.
All right, post yours

Bring it on!
