THe larger the ray the more likely you will get hit from the sides. The smaller the ray the more flexible it is and anything goes.

I am talking about freshwater rays.

It is safe to assume that wherever the disk is, the tail can reach. Additional point: The spine is attached to a small erector muscle that literally moves the spine independent of the tail giving the spine additional coverage area when it defends itself.

Be curious, be careful. -FM
So do Saltwater stingrays behave in a different manner?

FM's post hold true for marine rays as well... with the exception that some rays have the barb up at the base of the tail and can't move it far at all. Others (usually benthic rays) are equipped very similar to the mid tail (or even end of tail) barb of FW rays.

I've seen much more side to side swinging than over the top. And I've been nailed while being behind the ray's disc - ray facing away from me.

Yea ive been hit once. Side by side motion. Just caught the side of my thumb. Small cut but hurt like hell. Soaked it in the hottest water i could stand for an hour or so. My thumb still isnt right as of today.

I have heard though that the ray doesnt have to sting you for it to hurt. Just a brush up against you with the barb will hurt as well. So the post I posted earlier was just from something I read online. But in my opinion, I think a ray can get you from any direction. Meaning to or not....
I watch River Monsters alot and he said on one of his freshwater ray shows that just a tough from the barb will hurt. And like some have said on here, being behind, on the side or even in the front, If the ray wants to sting you, or trashes to just get away, it can hurt just being hit by the bard in anyway.
Mine, so far... have not stung me. I have however been cleaning and scared them from time to time and they trash trying to get away.

is it true that the chances of one trying to sting u are slim., unless ur steping on it or got it cornored an really pissing it off. bc i like to hand feed mine, i know to be aware of them so i dont get stung on accident by them going crazy for the food. someone had told me u can put something over the barbs as they come an go. is this true

Well the story behide mine was i dropped a pair of scissors in the pond by accident and went after it too fast to save the rays and she got me. I used to hand feed mine also. But :iagree: with usmctanker.

like a rubber band or something?

I was netting a small motoro that I had caught in Peru and hand carried to Socal to put in my 1,500 gallon. As I was putting he in the bucket he sort of got stuck on hes disk.I put my hand down to the net he tried to hit me by coming over his body.He missed but it was a blur.I got a lot of respect after that.

they do the airline tubing over the stinger. but with the excess drag imposed on the barb by the tubing, the stinger will tend to bleed and get infected, so if it is a permanent resident in your tank, keep away from the stinger and dont do this. they really only use the tubing for the people who temporarily handle and ship the rays, assuming that the new owner will remove the tubing once the ray is received, or once the stinger falls out
