How fast will these Convict Fry grow?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I have a large batch of con fry just about 2 months old. The largest are just now reaching over 1".

They will grow much faster if you can get them out of that breeder box and into a 10g tank.

Exactly also watch out for ones that grow fastest they may pick on and eat smaller ones.

They're the ones you want to keep anyway, unless you want to sell them all for as much money as possible, in which case the beautiful process of natural selection may not be your friend.

what u guys think is better, my midas will prob lay tonight, when they hatch should i put them in one of those breeder cages, or should i move them to a 10 gal i got for them.

If you know the mother won't be stressed, then I say put them in the 10g; otherwise, have the mother take care of them. she probably will raise hell defending her brood and you can remove all the fry out later when they get bigger.

:iagree: unless you are planning on keeping 20 cons, I'd let natural selection run its course.

how much do LFS's offer for baby cons, anyway?

Most LFS that actualy carry cons in my area will sell 1" cons for $4-$5. Absolute rip off.

If you want decent growth out of your fish, get them out of that death trap and into a 20G+ tank. Anyone who claims they can get 1.5"+ convicts in 1 month is BS'ing. These fish only grow 5-6" so are not renoun for thier speed.

i've seen 1" cons for about $2.99, but I don't know the exchange rate, as you are in Australia. if you buy 2 cons once, you'll never need to buy any more, so I guess $6.00 for a pair isn't unfair. I haven't bought convicts in 10 years (then I bought one black, one pink); I have some, my roommate has some, my brother has some, my friend has some, my mom's friend has some...

I'm not sure how your "I know everything about fish" Front, mixed potential size, with growth rate....Now if your theory holds true Mr Mystix, please explain guppies to the class sir....They only grow so big, but yet the fry grow at an alarming rate soooo.........Fail

Convicts are extremely prolific and this means exteremely easy to obtain. No money in it. The two babies I have are being raised just for the hell of it. I gave my females to my buddy because the spawning and parenting behavior was becoming disruptive in my tank.

I only have one convict (male) left in my tank and he is making a great dither. Convicts make great dithers for a lot of new world cichlids.

they are good at making sure clouds of food particles coming out of oscars' gills don't make it to the floor, too.
