how good of oxygenation do atabapo pikes need?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and from my research they also require sand or a substrate to sift through which i was kinda surprised by is this true? hes currently in a barebottom (just because its winter and i need a hose to rinse play sand)

I find air pumps and HOB filters inadequate for those species evolved to I've a rheophillic existence, because these devices really don't move water in a strong enough directional flow.
Rivers and even laminar flow in some lakes and Cenotes are moving walls of water, the simple upwelling an aerator provides, or the dribble of a HOB, or canister fluent is wimpy in comparison.
Beyond simple obesity, these species can become overly aggressive if the extra energ they are eqiup with is not used to deal with the constant flow, and even become susceptible to fungal and bacterial ailments if their environment is not right.

what niche do pike cichlids occupy in the wild? Could you compare them to trout in the streams here?

Predator in high flow areas (just below pbass). They mainly hunt other fish and crustaceans. The dwarf pikes don't experience 1000+ flow like the other species.

they wait behind objects like boulders where its calm in white water water environments so that they can ambush fish that pass by, in this sense their behavior can be similar to a large trout but they dont occupy the same niche because trout mostly eat small insects and larvae and such where pike are mostly piscivorous. pike are also capable of eating larger prey because their jaws expand quite a bit.

are you saying theyre a peg down from peacock bass on the food chain?

so just buy a powerhead then?

A powerhead like the Sicce (there are many other brands available)is one of the best ways of creating a wall of water.
You will notice the way this type spreads flow out, using a number of ports.
Some of the older varieties of powerhead focused the flow thru one narrow portal, and I found that slightly limiting for tanks with rheophillic species.
The newer versions also attach magnetically, which allows a more various placement anywhere on the glass.
An example below, is the older type powerhead with narrow focus I used to use, and had a sort of J hook attachment where it hung from the tank rim, which limited at what depth it could be placed..
