[ Sorry for posting this twice ] [ breeding ghost shrimp ]

Okay, first of all ,

you need your ghost shrimp, wherever you get them make sure you get like 40.
Some might have eggs already. And you have good chances of getting a male and female.
Put them in a well established tank and feed them good! Algae wafers, shrimp pellets, flakes ect.

If good water quality is maintained you should be okay, some people add reef calcium and iodine at half the recomended dose.

----
When you notice a female ghost shrimp with eggs , [I wait a week first] remove female to seperate tank.
This worked for me ,, I placed the prego female shrimp in a ? 1/2 -1 gallon seethrough sterilite bucket, with large round pebbles/rocks on the bottom.

I added water from the tank she was in, I added duckweed , pond snails, java moss,
hair algae, hornwort, plastic floating plants. I continued to feed her good. Changing some of the water daily and replacing it with water from the main tank.

It was fall so the temperature slowed the whole process, so a week or two later I notice the eggs she'd been holding were perfectly formed tiny shrimps. I checked her every 5 minutes , then finally she was empty, no baby shrimp?

Well, the sunlight was shinning through the window and barely hitting the corner of the bucket. In the sunshine all ''schooled up'' was all the shrimpies..

I sucked em' out with a turkey baster[ watch out they jerk backwards very fast ,hard to catch them] ..

The tiny shrimps eat live infusoria for a week or so, finally after molting [sheding] however many times? They will walk upright instead of float upside down as they have been doing. Now they are ready for '' grown up food'' you could mix up food and crush it .
example,, in a plastic bag [a strong one] add , flakes, algae wafers, sinking and floating
foods/pellets, shrimp pellets, freeze dried krill ect.
-Close the bag, and roll over and over with a heavy weight[ or something ;} ]
until you have a fine powder, mix well, store in a old glass jar {miricle whip jar perhaps?}
feed at least 3 times a day.

Oh yeah,, while housing any creature in a small tank/bucket you should do daily water changes at least 20% . This includes mommy and baby shrimps.

Also ghost shrimp love eating live/dead pond snails. And they have baby shrimps all year long once mature [if a male and female of the same species are present]

Theres more but i've been typing forever.. Hope this helps someone...

Sooooo..... Which spot should we get???

Hmm... I don't think I'll be able to get 40... they cost alot over here, from .50$ to 1.00$ each -_- expensive stuff

Anyways, what do you keep your 40 ghosties in?

And do i have to seperate batches of babies? Like no older babies with younger babies.

Finally, the whole process sounds like so much work. Would it work if i just tossed them into a really big tank and left them be?

cool article, will probably help a lot of people, people are always wanting to breed their own feeders.

There's actually qiute a few threads on GS breeding, another nice addition.

if it wasnt for the goldfish the pond would prpbably been filled with shrimp.

Zing, yes you can just toss them in a decent size tank (55g+) and let them be. did that too til wifey wanted some fish...

Okay, well if you find a pregnant ghost shrimp just one would be enough. The idea of buying 40 shrimp came from me, needing a male and female of the same species. You can try getting some ghost shrimp shipped to you {petsolutions.com ? } It would cost you about 30 dollars for 100 shrimp shipping costs around 20 dollars. Okay, so thats not cheap :( I just had alot of trouble obtaining any shrimp, so when I finally found enough at a local fish store, I bought 40 of them for around 6 dollars. I am still buying them and havent used any of the ghost shrimp i've raised as feeders . So at this point ''its not worth the hastle '' but I will never give up.

Now I can say for a fact I have at least 10 females and at least one male .
The male shrimps are successfully fertilizing the eggs. This morning I observed 3 female ghost shrimp holding eggs. 2 of which are full of over 20eggs {green with little black dots[eyes]}. The last prego shrimp has 8 eggs which are green with no little black dots [eyes] {not fertilized?}

When you first see the eggs they are green or clear? They start to look like
shrimps after you see the iddy-bitty eyes{ black-dots} , then the female shrimp will release them , if shes in clean water and fed alot!

Ive found three baby shrimp in a 20 gallon long tank with 6 guppies and 8 kuhli loaches. These baby shrimp even survived the whisper power filter and made it all the way to ''free-standing'' when I saw them, caught them and then they died from high nitrates and/or to much ammonia!

Yes, its my fault they died [ dont call peta:( ]
So.... that is why you should do daily 20% water changes if you raise the shrimps in small containers.

Random Tips.....,,

_-In every tank I mention, I add smaller pond and rams SNAILS!, I assume they produce natural infusoria for the shrimp to eat, snails eat extra food, You feed snails to puffers, snails are fun to watch;) I could go on forever..

_-In every tank/bucket/vase/ect. I add live and fake plants, leaving access to the surface of the water {Always!}

_-Baby shrimp are raised in bare bottom glass vases sitting in the window until big enough to move.

_-There is a myth {[ Ghost shrimp babies ramming into the glass sides of the aquarium because of the light, and this kills them[} Although this could be true with other shrimp/animals, the shrimp I have love the sunlight.
I find the babies because of the sunlight from my south facing window the tank sits half-way in front of. Im not sure the sun will shine through in the summer:(

_- I have found 3 ghost shrimp babies fully formed and wandering around a 20 long with bright lights that I leave off.

_-The healthy mature female ghost shrimp make eggs monthly? If a male doesnt fertilize them, she probably eats them . I always remember she can grab the eggs/baby shrimps and eat them, so I make her life as easy and stress free as possible!

_-Im not sure that the pregnant ghost shrimp will or will not eat the ghost shrimp babies once released, my guppies will.

_-I remove the shrimplets with a turkey baster to a glass flower-vase,
good luck its hard to catch ghost shrimp babies!

_- I am not sure if the small/baby shrimps are sensitive to chlorine or other meds/water treatments { I assume they are!} , to avoid any problems I use water from the _Main tank when doing the daily water changes for the shrimps.

_-The _Main tank maintenance is as follows,,. -I change the water in the tank once a week or every two weeks , letting 25 % of the water drain right out of the window, thanks to my syphon hose ! --[through the window] I re-fill the tank using the garden hose, adding aqua-safe into the filter flow to remove chlorine and other things [copper hopefully], I wait a day to use this water for the shrimpies water changes!

_-If everything goes right, the shrimp eggs will look like tiny shrimplets for a day or two before she releases them into the water. When you look and notice she willingly let them go,, take the momma shrimp and toss her back in the _Main tank. [ I feed the fish in the _Main tank before adding ANY fish or shrimp, this way the older animals are busy eating, while the new animal can find a place to hide! or grab some food?]

_-The tiny newly released ghost shrimp babies are hard to see ,they swim upside-down and back-wards:D Its cute, and amazing, I watch them zoom around in the sunlight catching infusoria! They swim like this and can jerk back quickly if frightened! ? I might also feed some crushed flakes? After a day or two [ this and all things can take longer /never give up!] the baby shrimp should molt, you will see the old shells/molts, I leave this in the grow out bucket/ glass jar, along with anything else that settles to the bottom. The tiny shrimps eat and live amongst it.

_-Now the shrimps should be walking on the ground , upright.
I grow them the same way for at least a week and then add them to the
_5 gallon grow out, then when they look to large for a 5 gallon, put them wherever! The more you feed the faster they grow.

_-When doing water changes in a small jar/bucket/bowl/vase I use a turkey baster to remove the water, you can buy these at Wallmart/target or
anywhere! They are cheap and wonderful inventions!

Okay I am done typing today

Good Luck, Let me know if you get some baby shrimplets. I didnt write this for nuthin!

Got any pics???
love to see some...
