I found a big giant piece of a fallen tree branch at the beach. it was probably there for awile it was dry and definitely not sappy. I sunk it in a nearby lake about a month ago how long until I could retrieve and put it in my tank? im going to put a bunch of carbon in my filter when I put it in just incase something leaches but just outta curiosity how much longer?

Depends on the type of wood.
I soak logs in my rain barrel, if they are a heavy wood, they can be ready almost immediately, as far as sinking, but some of the light woods take months to become water logged, and will leech out tannins for months, turning your water tea brown .
be careful after soaking in a lake that you don't bring in parasites, that can be anything from lernea and argulus to leeches and zebra or quagga mussels.

The fastest way to get rid off the tannin is by soaking it on hot water,.water need to be throw if already darken..repeat until u satisfied

it will sink its very heavy, if it leaches tannins will the carbon absorb it further clearing the water or no?

Not sure about it..We all know how the carbon is functioning but will it capable absorbing all tanin leaches out of the wood?it still a question..but u can try..maybe need a lot of carbon to do the job..let me know if it work

Haven't heard of anyone soaking a piece in a lake before. Like duanes said, be careful of picking up parasites and other critters if you're doing that.

I've always soaked in clean containers like duanes mentioned. Some wood has sank in a couple of weeks and some has taken months. Just depends how dense the wood is and how dried out the wood is.

Best bet is to soak it in salt water. Lots of salt!!
Then if u can, boil it for about 20 to 30 minutes or even bake it in an oven.
This will take care of parasites and bacteria.
Then soak it again to make it sink.
This worked for me

I could only image my girlfriend getting how from work and asking whats for dinner, only to find a piece of bogwood in the oven :). I would not have a girlfriend for long if that happened.

After you bake it in the oven does it take a long time to sink again as you would of dried it out?

Really depends on the piece and type of wood. I currently have a piece thats been underwater for almost a year and still has to be held down with a few large rocks. lol.

Our Pearsei seems to enjoy moving the rocks and letting it float.
