how long do i have to sink driftwood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's a problem.
You need to make sure it's really clean and that there aren't parasites inside. They can go dormant and come out later.
( that's what I've been told).
Invest in a good UV.
My first piece I found in a river had a bad bacteria on it. Wasn't there when I put it in my tank, but 3 weeks later ,my rays stopped eating, and then I noticed the slime on the driftwood.
I pulled the wood out and the next day they were eating just fine.

I have 4 big piece in a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tote outside and they have been in there about 5 months now and still won't sink.. As soon as I take the rock off them they float right to the top.. "(BUT JUST IN MY OPINION") From my wood that I have here I also took it out of the river, when I was out on the boat I looked around to find some nice piece's and the 4 that I have was full of red worm looking things and a million little white leach looking things but they was so small you could barely see them. I'm not sure what they was but I bet they would not be good for fish.. I change the water in the tote every 3 to 4 days to keep it clean and get all the Tem. out so a few times when I changed it I filled it back up with pure hot, hot water and would turn the water back on 3 or 4 times a day to keep it hot so it could get into the wood good and hot.. Its just sitting in my back yard so I would just let it over flow for 30 40 minutes to keep it real hot and flush them all out.. That seems to do the trick for me so please make sure you do something to clean it out and treat it real good before you use it in a tank... NOW JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS... THIS IS JUST WHAT I DID WITH MY WOOD AND IT WORKED GOOD FOR ME, THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT IS THE RIGHT OR WRONG WAY OF DOING IT BUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT GO AHEAD AND SEE IF IT WORKS GOOD FOR YOU!!!! Let's not get all that S..t started again...LOL... By the way Jag glad to hear the fish made it and are doing good... I completely understand your position at the beginning of this thread!!!!!! Good luck buddy..

I'd use a weak bleach solution if you're worried about parasites from the river/lake. That said, I know plenty of people who will use it straight out of the river with just a quick hose down and scrub. I'm not sure what the likelihood of unleashing some sort of terrible wild parasite into your aquarium is, but it doesn't seem too likely to me.
