Hello, I'm new to MFK and to monster fish keeping in general, so hi:D

What I'm wondering is, can anyone tell me roughly how many gallons a 72"x24"x24" tank would be? Also what kind of fish would be able to live in here for life? I like the look of shovel-nose cats.

180 gallons in the US, 150 Gallons in the UK.

Cichlids of various types are a goodun, larger barbs like tinfoils and yellow fins etc. Lima SN would be ok, Tigrunus if your budget stretches to it. Tiger SN will out grow it. What fish did you have your eye on to go in it?

6' x 2' x 2' is 180 US gallons.

search google for "dimensions to gallons converter" or something like that and you can find sites that will let you put in the dimensions and it will tell you the gallons.

no need to do a Google search .. we have a conversion chart here ... just go to the top of the page right by blog and search .. everything you need is there

Thanks. I'm not too keen on cichlids, except cichla. would one be able to live in there it's whole life, or at least for a long time? Lima shovelnose sound pretty cool too.

better start doing some research first .. that tank is not big enough to keep many monsters for life ... its not that big of a tank .. and catfish are some of the bigger fish that people keep .. so i would not get my hopes up ..

1 Cichla could certainly start out in there and be there for a long while. don't know if you'll have issues with more than 1 when they get large. Tempted to put my largest bass at 14 inches into my tank of the same size when i set it back up to let it put on a couple more inches. Lima May be a little small and become a snack depending how fast the growth rate is on the bass if you get one.

Cool 14", how long did it take to get that big? I've got a slightly smaller tank as well so if the lima is small I can grow it out in there.

that tank would just be a grow out .. most Pbass can get 24" and the catfish can get more then that .. both of which have fast growth rates ..

since your asking for fish that would be good for life .. you need to look at things like oscars .. or jags .. fish like that .. not 2 foot plus monsters ..
