How much will a 240 gallon aquarium weigh

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that seems a bit weighty for an empty tank doesn't it? ...either that or I've been lifting too many steel plates... my 100 gallon didn't seem to weigh much at all..

despite me not knowing my own strength... ..you should probably calculate how much water volume the sand and gravel will consume.. then recalculate your volume..

231 cubic inches in a gallon..

my 100 gallon is 72"Lx18"Wx18"H ..so with avg 2 inches of sand and gravel in the bottom I'd have to figure 72x18x16 to get the actual volume.. ..which is now approximately 89 gallons. then all the other rocks and whatnot are probably taking out another 4 or 5 gallons, so for an even number let's just say 85. the rocks and sand I have weigh around 100 lbs.. so my whole rig weighs just under 1000lbs.

A 240 gallon glass tank weighs a great deal more than a glass 100. Our 240 weigh even more because it's made out of thicker glass (5/8) But then whenever possible I get thicker glass. I know our 150 weighs much more than twice what our stock 100 gallon weighs.

It would be on the bottom floor but there are pipes underneath it. I'm a kid, and it was hard enough getting my mom to buy me one for Christmas so would it be ok. My mom is checking the maximum the floor can hold.

right, plus the stand weight, fish weight, rocks weight, lid weight...

does the weight of fish actually add to the tank? yes it is in the tank but the weight of the water displaced by the volume of the fish is greater than the weight of the fish i would think. if a person were to jump in the tank, water gets displaced and I wouldn't think the weight below the tank on the floor would increase.

just thinking, being bored at work.

get then to do the calculations, given the specs on your floor
unless it's on a slab, for instance reinforced my second floor can support roughly 4000lb
believe me a little money up front to be safe is well worth it
are they gas pipes? water pipes ? sewage pipes?
all that weight goes in a relatively small area as well
Think worst case scenario possible then go from there

lol, that was exaggeration to add to effect. Unless of course, you have a monster catfish or pima which weighs over 100lb

Overestimate. And there is something else you maybe forgetting - Filter system!!! If you do a DIY wet/dry that can add substantial weight even more.

My calculations were figuring 2,600 - 3,000 lbs when I built my DIY stand. That much weight and water and time can cause a lifetime of pain and money in the long run.

Look through the boards at what happens when over 200gals runs through a house - $10,000 worth of damage - YIKES!!!

Overbuild and Overplan and you will sleep easy. A wiseman once said place tank perpendicular to joists.

-"whats that creaking?!?!"
