i'm noticing alot of "crap" in the bottom of my sump...i've only had this sump running on my tank for about a month or so...is it normal to have to clean it this soon? should i make it a monthly thing? how do you clean yours out?

You need to up you mechanical filtration maybe a filter sock or two. I clean my sump once a year I clean my over head filter more often due to algea. I once had a problem with a dirty sump causing an ammonia spike so keep an eye out.

Every now and then I'll throw a spare pump in there are refilter all of the gunk with some super fine filter floss. Seems to work.

great thanks....im not looking forward to cleaning it but it has to be done....probably gonna get some more finer filter media to go in it also.

filter socks make this way too easy. The filter sock catches all the crap before it goes through the media. Therefore, all you need to do is change out the sock....the sump is clean :)

Yeah, before I installed filter socks my sump would build up lots of detritus, now it hardly has any.

I put a convict in my sump, keeps the detritus stirred up and does not build up. When I first set up tank I had about 2-3" of detritus in sump and just siphoned it out. I use socks on 2 of my other sumps as well. I put a strainer on my in line return pump as not to suck up the fish or crabs I occasionally put in sump as well.

Socks up front will catch a lot more, best to have couple pairs so you can swap them out before they get too dirty. In my second chamber I run a fluval 304 packed with floss, the flow is pretty low but it catches everything and keeps the sump pretty clean.
