How thick of styrofoam to put under acrylic tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Stand was fine till I added a 40lb driftwood and since then it started leaking. Been putting it aside but this need to be done this week. I need some thing flat and strong to place under the tank.

Mdf board is amazing. Its cheap. Only downfall is if it gets set it becomes pulp so I put the board in a trash bag and once the tank is on rje stand its easy to pull the bag tight snf you'll never notice it. Its extremtly flat.

If ur stand is fully supported it was def the foam then...thats the only place where the tank could have bowed. If thats not the case seam seperation is very common in poorly made (mass produced) acrylic tanks and is nothing to worry about (easy fix imo). But extra sheet or rod is not needed (it can be added in but is not needed) . I ust to repair seams with #16 and square rod. After 3 years ive had them start to seperate again. #40 is a 2 part epoxy with almost the exact same chemical properties of the acrylic itsself. Its basically "liquid acrylic". If you tip and pour with #40 with a 1/4"-1" bevel it will be stronger than it ever was factory made. Older acrylic tanks were made like this and i have no idea why they stopped. My guess is to mass produce a cheaper/quicker product. Any used acrylic tank i get i take the time to "tip and pour" all the seams with #40 just to make them last another 20+ years with no problems. If u have any questions or need more pics feel free to ask. If u already bought some acrylic rod u may as well use it, either method will work and make the tank better.

Sorry forgot to answer ur question about dry time...the weld on #40 bottle says 72 hours for a full cure. I usually wait a week or two but thats just my personal prefrence. I also lay down very very fatty bevels around 1-2" lol so thats y i wait so long. If you only do a bevel 1/4"-3/4" it will dry quicker. Also if you use some square rod with the #40 it will use less glue and dry quicker. Im not sure what u have to put ur fish in so that could affect the method you choose if you need it back up auper quick. Imo get a nice tub for them, take ur time on the tank and it will pay off in the end.

Just dont panic lol...itell b ok. I also suggest wearing a good respirator or tieing a shirt around ur face with #40 its extremly fumey. Not a bad idea to do it in ur garage either. Alot of work i know but its all worth it.

Quite easy too. I'm do the other side in the morning and I notice how the old 16 bubbled. You could pop them when I ran my fingers through it

I'm not seeing anyone suggest checking the floor for warping. On huge tanks 200+ that suddenly start leaking that were level when setting them up, then the floor warping is usually the culprit.
