Take a pipe or hose and hold one end to your ear. Hold the other end to the pipe and then to the pipe opening in the filter. You'd be surprised where most of the sound is actually coming from.

Experiment by wrapping the pipe with a thick blanket. I am certain that you will find that wrapping the pipe is not an ideal solution. It is better to address the cause rather than the symptom.

Ball valve will do the trick. It's the only way I could make the wet/dry in my living room silent.

There's a pipe wrap made of black foam tube http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=21374-2249-444-144-06U&lpage=none (for covering hot water pipes outside), split, with adhesive to reseal it. several different sizes tho it may take two pieces to wrap all the way around the pipe. And there are two kinds, get the soft closed cell foam. Can you put the exit of the pipe under water?

If it's the noise everybody thinks, your probably going to have to regulate the flow out of the pipe. :(
Or turn the radio up :D. Works for problem noises in the car .

Or tell everyone that's the way it's supposed to be and you like it.:screwy:

I dont think wrapping will make any appreciable sound difference but ive never tried.
I have another suggestion however; Why dont you exchange the first elbow to a T piece (with a small riser to keep it above water level) so the air can get out the top at least. I think you will still have water noise but no gurgle noise. I always use Ts as first join as a matter of course which is another way to stop back siphons.

Putting something inside the pipe or having a tap WILL reduce pipe volume and flow marginally but what the guys are talking about is to create a backlog of water. Think of the pipe as being full of marbles when there is a backlog. Adding new marbles to the top as fast as you can results in marbles at the bottom being pushed out at same rate even though the pipe is full. Right now your marbles are falling down an empty chute clanging and bouncing all the way.....

weeeellll this explanation sounded clear when in my head :)

yeah the pipe is acting kind of the same way as a megaphone. a vast majority of the sound is coming from the opening of the pipe. if you wrap it the noise will still come from the pipe openings.

If you look under a sink, you can see the pipe go into an "S" shape, that will eliminate the girgling sound. So you need a longer piece of flexible hose so you can tie it into a "S" shape and voila`.G/l.

if u wanna go the "s" route just go to u'r local box store or hardware and pickup a s-trap that's the right size. it's much easier and cheaper than building u'r own. gl

maybe im an idiot...maybe im a genius..but why not just stuff a bunch of prefilter material in either the whole pipe or just the bottom elbow???water should still flow it just wont hit your pipes as much...im just thinking what i would do to try and rig it up...
