I'm slowly working on setting up a 75 gallon aquarium with a corner flo overflow. I'm building a wet dry sump with filter sock. I'm thinking about getting a reactor I'll probably run purigen in. I just have a few questions. What would be a good pump to run this? I plan on running the reactor off the sump. I'm also curious where would be the best place to have the intake and output for the reactor in the sump. I'm assuming I'll want to have the pump at the end where the return pump is, so the water going to the reactor already had been through the rest of the filter. Would I just put the output as close to the intake for the return pump, so hopefully the water goes back to the display tank? Thanks.

Ok. I ordered a Nextreef MR1 Monster reactor and a Maxi Jet 1200 to run it. According to what I saw that's what they recommended. I'll put a small ball valve to adjust the flow if needed.

I'm running 1L of purigen in the phosban 550 reactor. I had to modify the sponges in the reactor cuz the purigen just blows right through and into your sump. I run 50gph through the reactor. Any higher gph flow was too strong and makes the purigen clump up towards the top.

Thanks. I might have to get a smaller pump. I know I can use a ball valve to slow it down, but it might be noisy if I restrict the pump too much. I guess I could tee it and let the excess just go back to the beginning of the sump if needed. I think the MR1 Monster has a 2 gallon capacity. I'm going to run purigen in one chamber, but haven't decided about the other.

Yes u will definitely need a smaller power head/pump to run it properly. Maxi jet 1200 is way too powerful even with a ball valve. I was running a Maxi jet 600 with a ball valve opened barely 15-20% and the powerhead was buzzing loudly. Ran it for about a week then downgraded the powerhead to a 80gph one and the ball valve is open about 50%. Now my MJ-600 powerhead has problems running. I have to hit it sometimes to get it running. IMO Maxi jets are cheap so they burn out easily.

+1 mine leaked stray voltage into my tank.

Ok. The reactor I ordered said it could handle up to gph. I knew, since purigen is so small and light you had to use a slower flow. I didn't know if it was like half the normal flow or what. Thanks.

Doesn't matter how big the reactor is and what's recommended flow rates. Yes those recommended flow rates work with heavy media (bio pellets, phosphate remover etc..). When running purigen in a reactor loosely minus those recommended flow rates by 70-80%.
