Considering Chuck Norris retired champion and undefeated I would say that he earned a little bit of respect.

If Chuck Norris retired undefeated those 3 losses on his record are going to be a ***** to explain.

it's his pony tail that keeps landing him movie roles

From his site.
Chuck was a martial arts star, winning many martial arts championships including being a six-time undefeated World Professional MiddleWeight Karate Champion.

From 1964 to 1968, Chuck won many State, National, and International amateur karate titles. In 1968, Chuck fought and won the World Professional MiddleWeight Karate championships by defeating the World's Top Fighters. He held that title until 1974 when he retired undefeated.

Here is another pretty cool fact.

In 1997, Chuck achieved another milestone in his life by being the first man ever in the Western Hemisphere to be awarded an 8th degree Black Belt Grand Master recognition in the Tae Kwon Do system. This was a first in 4,500 years of tradition.

Here is the link. http://www.chucknorris.com/html/biog.html

Now on wikipedia it states that he retired with a record of Chuck Norris retired with a karate record of 183-10-2.
It does not say how many fights were amatuer and how many were pro though.

His franchise is probably a lot bigger than you think. He's also known world wide, where chuck norris is primarily of north american and online fame (in recent years).

But the simple fact that he enjoys making them and has the money to produce them, it probably reason enough for him to make movies. Do you stop doing something you like if someone tells you it sucks?

1966: Defeated by Ed Steen
1967: Defeated by Marcos Solar
1968: Defeated by Louis Delgado

If you meant that he was not defeated while he held the title, then that is correct; which he earned not long after his defeat by Delgado. I'm not trying to take away from his talent by any means. Aside from being a nutjob post martial arts career (only in my humble opinion) he was one of the most amazing fighters I have ever seen.
