Any chance i could use a longhorn skull like the one you would see in the desert in my tank? perhaps my 55 gallon breeder im setting up now, for convicts, or a 90 gal, tank? anyone ever had this idea before? and is it a good or bad idea for the fish? I cant think of many cons off the top of my head...THanks=josh:nilly:

the calcium could harm the water i would soak it in some aquarium salt/stabelizer and try that

glass it

good question.

I have no idea. I would make sure its REALLY clean. I'm sure thats a given though. heh.

How big is your tank??? Those longhorn skulls are gigantic.

I keep antlers (deer, elk, moose), and carapaces in my tanks. The antlers are all in african tanks to help keep the water on the alkaline side. The AST carapace is epoxy sealed to preserve it and make it easy to wipe algae from it.
You can keep skulls in tanks but it's best to epoxy coat them for the reason stated above. Without the sealer, the only way to clean the algae completely from it would be to soak it in warm bleach. Then, you'll have to neutralize the bleach before putting it back in the tank.
BTW, antlers (dried and with the velvet removed) are also great for anyone keeping the larger varieties of snails. They'll grind small surface particles off to glean the calcium they need for shell development.

There was someone here that used a jacobs ram's head in his tank, it looked amazing! But I can't find the thread it may have been lost in the move. I hope not, but yea If you want the skull I would epoxy the bone first before placing in the tank.

thats RECKLESS, human skull in the tank? beats my idea... but for the longhorn maybe i need to downgrade a bit, my dad is a taxidermist so i think I'm going to ask for a skull from his prize tag this year..:headbang2

I found a Website... WWW.Skullsunlimited.com and they sell various skulls of literally all animals, there are some which are Replica bone, some antique finish and Natural bone. Is natural Bone real you think and would a Replica be better? iWant the NAtural bone, what do you think is right? also the Crocodile is lookin sweeeet.

Have no idea what they use to make 'replica' skulls. It could just be plaster which will dissolve overnight in water. If their material is kiln-dried ceramic, that can go into the tank. And, if the finishing material is unknown, don't try it since it's toxicity would also be unknown. Whatever you choose, the safest thing would be to seal it in epoxy.
