Identify that Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your talking about wholesale tropical in east London, I know the owner very very well and that’s where I got all my awesome American cichlids from as well as my 2 foot RTG Arowana.

He closed the shop in January and I’ve struggled since to find decent stuff
Yes that was it, there fish list was amazing! It’s a shame they closed.

We kept Mayan cichlids years ago, there good cichlids. Aggressive and fun to keep. In fact I bought one awhile back from our lfs, it was tiny as it turned out it’s not a Mayan at all but a orange saum. We bought 3 or 4 bags of cichlids with several in each. He probably just scooped up the wrong one. I’m planning on ordering a few that way I know I get one. We’ve kept actual Red Terrors Festae as well. They look similar but act much different. Mayan cichlids in my experience are more aggressive then festae. Both are awesome, Red terror’s look better especially the female’s

I really like red terrors and are one of my favourite to keep.

From my research Mayans do look very similar but they are just something I really want to try and grow out and keep,

Well maybe someone on here can buy a few and grow them out to a couple inches and possibly ship them to you. We are no where near an international airport but a lot on here are. You would have to pay them for shipping and cichlids but if that’s the only way to get some it would be worth it. Maybe write out a post when you can afford a over sea shipment and see if anyone is willing to ship some to you. I would request about 7 at least so you could get a pair to form out.

Good idea

Money is not an issue, I’d just need to know how much

Would be totally insane to get some wild caught if that was possible

For some reason they are calling the Oscars, Mayans, and what ever else comes out of the Florida lakes as wild caught?
Maybe if a tank raised cichlid is dumped into a lake then has fry does that make them wild caught?
I’d say the fry were wild as they were born in the wild and caught in the wild, I’ve always been under the impression that tank fish wouldn’t stand a chance in the wild because they are so well looked after with the filtration and steady heat they just would t cope in the wild but I’m clearly wrong maybe

I would say Florida water ways are suitable temperature wise for almost any cichlids to thrive. Even though they spawned in lakes or canals they technically are not wild caught. Their original parents were tank raised probably from a lfs and probably not wild caught or even F1 and even if they were they would be bred down. The only way to get true wild caught would be to have them collected from there original habitat in Central America. Just my 2 cents.

I googled shipping cost to the U.K. It’s not that bad actually, I would see if someone could hook you up. Of course check all of your laws before you do just in case. A fish is not worth getting in trouble over

we struggle to get anything nice over here in the UK, weather it be for the export issues or the price. No one is keeping the American cichlids anymore they opt for African because they are so cheap and there's hundreds of them on the market.

Its a real shame

Unfortunately that’s happening on this side of pond as well. It’s just one of the ebbs and flows of the aquarium hobby. Losing two of the largest importers and breeders was a huge loss for the hobby. I only keep cichlids from central and South America each time I’m looking for a certain fish it becomes a monumental quest which still ends in failure quite often. I tried keeping Africans quite a few times and they’re just incredibly boring to me.

Also, sorry to hear about your beani. The mixed tanks of cichlids like that rarely work out in the long term. There are always people posting pictures and videos of their mixed tanks touting how great the fish get along but what you don’t hear about is how quickly that type of system explodes in grand fashion time and time again after fish reach maturity.
