iguana habitat??

My iguanas are free- roamers. I live in East Texas so in my "fish" Room I don't have any AC in the room, just fans, and with the aquariums it is pretty humid. One window has been replaced with Green-House Glass which allows UVB through for my Iguanas to Bask in! VERY IMPORTANT for the absorption of Calcium! Insufficient UVB and proper food causes MBD (Metabolic Bone Diseas) which can and often does lead to a long and painful death!

For more information you can google The Green Iguana Society and post on their message forums. VERY nice people and VERY informative!!! They can and will give you directions on how to feed, What to feed, and blue prints (or can tell you where to find them) For cages.

Just a side note the 'MESH' is a BAD idea! It removes UVB from the lights as well as can cause toes to be ripped or cut out if a claw gets caught. Also, Do NOT use 'chicken' wire. "rabbit" or small grid coated wire is highly suggested. When you get am 8 to 10 pound iguana climbing by small toes and claws the added weight on a sharp piece of wire can have disasterous effects!

Also, the iguana should never be left alone to free-roam outside. ALWAYS use a protective cage to protect from larger birds of prey and other animals. Iguanas can easily over heat so they need to have some relief from the heat of the day. My guys have their own kiddie pool in their out-door cage.

I suggest IGUANAS FOR DUMMIES by Melissa Kaplan. I find it a very informative and facts only book. Very helpful! I keep 2 in my home.

id be stoked to see what you build and what the red phase looks like post some pics of the igi and enclosure when you build it...if useing mesh i would only use it at the top to let air circulate use a wood frame with strong plexi on the sides and go stupid

that is a crazy nice tiki hab you got setup crazy taco...first one i have really liked in a while...i was actually thinking about making my red foot tort enclosure outside with some tiki statues and art...im jealous

The red coloration is due to the locale of the iguanas parents, or the iguana itself if wild caught. Most iguanas from the el salvador region are red/orange. I had a 6'5 foot male el salvador iguana named mango. He was bright orange with black stripes. He did just fine in a 8 ft long x 6 ft high x 4ft deep. I built it for about $150 usd

When I was younger, I had an iguana that grew to about 4 foot before we sold him to a neighbor (we were moving) At that point in time, in our house he lived in a cage made out of 2X4's that I could easily stand and feed him in (I was around 7-8, so maybe 4 ft tall.) but I know that the folks we sold him too made a room in their house for the iguana to stay in.
