I got the plumbing parts for the undergravel filter for Chicago. The floor of Chicago is 5" below the bottom of the window opening which makes for an ideal 4" bed of lava rock topped with a piece of landscape fabric and then a couple inches of pea gravel to finish the substrate.
I'm using a sprinkler hose for the plumbing, It was my idea but it seems like common sense to use a flexible perforated hose. I used this last year in my pool-pond and it worked great.
