Hey Everyone, any know of anny links or old threads that have reliable information about these tarpon. Im very interested in one as I heard thier are very gentle and passive towards other fish compared to most fish.

Id like to find a reliable source that can tell me the following:

Temp:
Tank Size:
Growth Rate:
Average Adult Size:
Etc.

Also possible resources on where to get one.

Thanks A Million as Im having troubles finding a source...im not even sure if this is the right area of mfk to post this lol!

Temp: I kept mine at about 82*
Tank Size: HUGE. Though you'd be able to get by with a 4x8 footprint for a very long time
Growth Rate: Up to an inch a month, maybe more. They're comparable to black aros.
Average Adult Size: 3-4'. Saltwater specimens get larger than freshwater specimens.
Etc: Very easy to feed and peaceful. They make great punching bags for ATF. They have really beautiful chrome scales. Mine would wolf down anything he could fit in his mouth, but completely ignored any fish that were too big to eat.

That sucks thought they maxed out smaller in aquariums. Defintly woudn't' want to keep one cramped in a 180 or 240...thanks for the info tho at least Im aware.

But if i decided to try the tarpon to what size do you think it could last in a 6 foot by 24 inch tank as well as a 6 foot by 30 inch tank? And how is thier arket value? In a sense compared to the Pacus/RTC...is it gonna be hard to find a home for the tarpon?

It would be just as hard I think. If you put one in a 6x30 you'd probably be good for a few years. Think of them as a torpedo shaped arowana in terms of growth. It'll eventually get huge, but it will take a LOOOONG time. It should slow down quite a big once it hits 15-18", but tarpon are one of those fish that never stop growing, even though they're mature.

Thanks, maybe I might attempt to have one, the only reason why ir really want one is that I heard (from you as well) they seem to be very peaceful fish...defintly trying to find bullet proof fish for the other inhabitants.

Thanks A Million

Also do you know of any vendors that sell them? Ive noticed the atlantic ones usually for sale

Atlantics are actually much more rare to see in the hobby, and normally go for like $200. Seeing how common and cheap they are this year, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Believe it or not, Indos are much more common, they just didn't pop up yet this year for some reason.

i have heard they usually get 12-16in.

As stated in an earlier post, they continue to grow past that size, but only very slowly. Both species of tarpon will continue to grow until they die, the huge ones we see in fishing photos are older than most of the members of this forum.
