Input/possible advice for my 40g aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Y. Modesta Loach looks a lot like the the Red Tail Shark, but you need to keep at least three of them and they grow to seven inches. Maybe not as aggressive towards tankmates, but probably a little big and boisterous for a 40-gallon. I keep four Modestas. Great, active scavengers.

IMO, Modesta need a group of at least twenty. And they can get to ten inches long. Definitely not for a 40.

On the topic of loaches how long will it take for the Yoyos to reach max size? Theyve been growing slowly but I’ve seen some at stores that are pretty massive. I’m starting to think that 40g may not be enough space.

They may take two years to get to maximum given the right diet. They need lots of live food, brine shrimp, ghost shrimp and snails.

I only have four Modestas. Bought them as juveniles approximately seven or eight years ago.

All are healthy, built like seven inch tanks. I keep them in a 120 gal. long, w/ various Barbs, Tetras, YoYo's and a Berdmorei Tiger Loach. Other than being voracious eaters, never a problem.

Although I'd like a few more Modestas, 16 more of them is probably a bit much.

I have got more than eighty of them in one tank. Some I collected myself, have had for more than twenty years, and were quiet big then. I have seen them caught wild in massive colonies of thousands.

They certainly are tank like. Some of my favourite fish.

Wow, that's incredible. Yeah, the Modestas are one of my favorites too.

They aren't sold in my area very often. They are rarely discussed on the forums either.
Definitely an underrated Loach.

Probably the best scavenger species I've ever kept.

I’m thinking of upgrading to a 75g some time in the summer. Any fish in general you suggest getting if I do?

Athough I've kept so many different varieties of awesome Cichlids, my favorites are Barbs, Loaches and a few Tetra species.

Denison Barbs, Rosy Barbs, Tiger Barbs, Filamentosa Barbs, any of the smaller Botia Loaches.

Just do your research and if you find a species your interested in check in with the forum. Somebody here will be able to give advice.

Got a pic? It;s not doubt, I'd just love to see them!
Pic? I would like to ... but.

Nearly one hundred set up as a colony below a large cutoff piece of hardwood inside my large predator tank. They come out when there is food, and dive back down quickly. Not all of them. The council of elders sends out groups of soldiers to forage and come back quickly, but are rarely out themselves. The soldiers are small and strong. The elders are a ruthless bunch, and rule with nasty politics. If an elder is not strong enough, he will be banished to live in the open part of the tank where he will not thrive, and slowly (as a few have done) wither and die. Presumably, in their habitat, colonies expand as smaller groups coalesce.

So it is difficult to get pictures of any number of them together in my tank.

But below are some pictures of canal number ten, eighteen years ago, where a colony was jumping through the water gate one or two at a time. Many were caught. Most were eaten (not by me). I did manage to get quite a few, but transporting them over the next few days without oxygen, many died. A few of them still remain, under that piece of hardwood, wielding power over their underlings.
