Insects and oscars!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a couple of small bugzappers that I hang over my pond and stock tanks to supplement the fish's diets. Usually leave one over the pond fulltime and swap the other from one stock tank to the next each evening. It's easy and effective, and that sizzle/slurp of a bug being recycled is so pleasant on a summer evening...:)

Hi guys just a quick question on are there any bugs/insects that you shouldn’t feed oscars? Gonna get mine some calci worms and silk worms and just wondered if there are any that could injure my oscars! I’m guessing wasps and anything with a sting are out of the question! They’re only gonna be for treats and not a staple diet!
thanks

You could also get redworms or nightcrawlers. My O would gulp down huge nightcrawlers once he got tired of the redworms. You could get them from a bait shop or online.

When I was a kid I earned money by collecting nightcrawlers to supply bait shops. I used a lot for fish food and knew they came from pesticide-free lawns.

I still collect them for my own use, being similarly cautious, but I would be a bit leery of buying them nowadays. Plenty of bait shops sell worms that have been dyed bright chartreuse; known at least locally as "Nitro" worms. I surely wouldn't feed those things, and they make me wonder what other artificial concoctions might be applied to worms sold for bait.

Some enterprising collector needs to start marketing free-range, certified organic nightcrawlers! :)
