Well, inside gill curl is an interesting thought, a first for me. But I trust you, if you say it has no GC, neither out nor in. Like you said, perhaps his gill plate is too short but what I was originally saying is that there is a soft flap at the end of the gill cover which appears to be completely missing on the left of the fish. What's the right like?
OP pic 1 - no flap. Pic 2 - there is something sticking out that was not in pic 1. Perhaps that's what led Monsterminis to think an inside GC?
Yellow is unusual in natural coloration of TSNs but perhaps not impossible. RTCs don't have any yellow but once in a while one sees an RTC with yellow on their white flanks/stripes. Some say these can be urine stains or some such. I doubt it. Perhaps the diet.
Liver problems in humans (and fish?) lead to yellowing - the deposition of bilirubin pigment, if not mistaken.
As for the ID - you seem to want to start a thread, so go ahead, let's see what the community says.
So the gill flaps are there on both sides. Will chalk it up to weird coloration, morphology, and optical effect then.
I think it was the liver that was mentioned, not kidneys. IDK anything about either anyway.
