I was just wordering if sun light is good for your fish and also i heard that if you keep your light off that your fish will grow faster !!!! some1 give me answer please

not sure if technically fish "need" sunlight. But ime fish benefit from regular day/night cycles like most other creatures do. I've never heard of fish growing faster in unlighted tanks.. and I've never seen evidence of this. I have 1 tank w/out any lights, the fish all have regular growth rates. I will say haveing my lighting on a timer def ='s more confident behavior in my fish then randomly turning lights on and off.

fish tend to be more sedated in the dark, which could be beneficial if you have bullies roaming with the lights on, stressing out other fish in a community tank. Then again if there are no dominant fish to be concerned about a dormant lifestyle would probably yield a slower metabolism and slower growth.

I have one of my tanks next to a window so it gets natural light from outside, benefits from and day/night cycle instead of me randomly turning light on/off. Only got the fish last week so can't say if its growing faster or not.

IMO

The best environment for fishes is a tank which replicates their natural habitat as close as possible.
So if your fish live in open areas such as the shallows in the wild, 8~12 hours of light would do.
If your fish live in dark area like underwater caves, about 2~4 hours of light would do.

Please note that this has not been scientifically proven to have any actual benefits to the fishes and it is purely IMO

it depends on what fish you have and where they naturally come from, from what i know sunlight is beneficial to arowanas especially in intensifying its coloration.

Natural sunlight has been shown to effect coloration in goldfish, especially helping them preserve black.

Algae itself is beneficial to fish, so that side effect is good.

I would be surprised if there were no actual benefits from natural sunlight for them, just like humans need it for vitamin D.
