I have a group of 6 black bar silver dollars in a 240g tank. Sometimes when I walk near the tank or turn on the lights, they'll crash hard into the sides of the tank and be really jumpy. Is there something I can do to help them be less skittish?
Is there any way to get silver dollars to calm down and be less skittish?

I dont think there is anything you can do except put the tank in a low traffic area of your house but since yours is a 240 may not be that easy. When I had SD's they would always have smashed upper lips from smacking so hard I felt bad for them.
my SD's are the dumbest fish i've eve had . Always sketchin' ... , trying to swim through holes too small to fit through etc.... I still like them though . I'm growing out some spotted ones now . Good luck with chilling them out and let us know if you find a solution .

they are skitties, but they do come around during feeding time
I think keeping them in large number could reduce them from being skitties, but know their behaviour that they live in a shoal, once one of them go after the food the rest will come along.

Many fish get startled by shadows. Add overhead lighting to the room to avoid casting shadows when approaching a tank.
