well, I just met the parents of this fish (after questioning breeder).... Alas it is a tangerine tiger. I'll post pics of parents soon. This is just a youngster and his colors/stripes are just comming out. Guess we all cant be right all the time.
Indeed - after looking again I'm not seeing the crooked broken stripe of a steveni nor any sign of the white blaze down the face. I'm also not seeing the 2nd small horizontal stripe under the top fin of the empress - my bad - sorry - nice pickup!
It's always good to have a reliable dealer for proper ID - the parents even better.
To further help you out, heres a pic of 3 Red Empresses, 2 female Red Empresses, and one male Red Empress, there is also a juvenile Tangerine Tiger in the very back of the picture.The Red Empress is what you've mistaken for a Tangerine. The Tangerine Tiger's have vertical lines and Red Empresses have horizontal lines. That is one distinct trait to let you know the difference. Hope i have helped. Happy fish keeping.
