I fear the surprise lurking in my filter... Maybe I should clean it again, and watch out for anything that will make a meal out of me...

My Eheim 2262 was home to several dozen RCS (red cherry shrimp, ewok was right). Looks like they do just fine in there.

The second pic is an Eheim 2213 filter pot, and not only RCS, but also Black Bar Endler guppies do okay in there. I was actually surprised to see quite a few adults.

I guess the 2262 has a bit too much flow for the Endlers.

THAT is awesome sir. I wonder how much of an effect the shrimp had on chewing up crap in your filter/tank to reduce debris.
