I've been seeing a lot of tilapia spawning, anyone know how to catch them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i used to fish for these when i lived in Ft. Lauderdale. only way I've ever caught them is on bread that i didnt roll into a ball. just break a piece off the slice and hook it on. it has to be floating and you have to find the ones that are eating. i caught one on a surface lure once too. it was the firetiger pattern so the bottom was bright orange. just layed it in the water by the tilapia and it came up and ate it. basically, you have to find them when they are feeding and just float a bait by them dont move it.

Earthworm presented on a bobber works for me. Works with Mayan cichlids, too.

I'm not sure on the legality of spearing them but I did see people fishing for them with bow and arrow (not sure if thats legal either though) but sounds like worm or bread is my best bet, Ill have to try it sometime.

My daughters catch them all day long on pieces of white bread rolled into little balls. ALL DAY LONG! They are 7 and 9 yrs old. Once you get some tilapias under your belt you should try fishing for tarpon if you want a fight.

Yes I find the earthworm if cichlids are biting works for all cichlids other than PB.

Worm/bobber fishing is my type of fishing thats what I enjoy the most but use lures now and than for PB .

lol never considered bread thought it would break apart once it hit the water.

I have never caught a carp going to try it

I'm not much of a sit and wait guy which is why I prefer artificial cause I feel theres more of a hunt, but I understand worm and bobber can be relaxing, Funny how sometimes going to the basics works, Ill have to try a breadball like when I was 8 lol

Yes I imagine 99% of the people here would agree with you. I love the bobber method lol . For cichlids it works.

We went to the beach today and I took a walk by a rocky area where no one goes.
One guy caught a moray eel with rubber scented shrimp lure that he jiggles on a bobber next to boulders .
