Hello!
I’m planning to get a 75 Gallon Cichlid Tank (120 cm Long). I really like Jack Dempseys and I thought that the Jack Dempsey might be a nice centerpiece Fish. But the information in the Internet are different from Site to Site and the german Information are different again.
1. Is a JD suitable for a 75 Gallon Tank?
2. If yes, what a suitable tank mates for a Jack Dempsey?
If possible I just want to keep one JD to avoid breeding. I thought of tnakmates like other CA/SA cichlids or/and bottom dwellers.
PH: around 7.4
Hardness: around 12 dHG
Thanks for any suggestions

I also don’t mind any oddball fish tank mates if there are species that go well with a regular JD...

It's a big fish 10-12". It's very territorial. I would only add dither fish like swordtails or mollies. No other cichlid. If you want more medium to large cichlids start with a 6 foot tank.

My problem is: In Germany, its says that rocio octofasciata only gets at maximum size 20 cm that’s around 8 inches.
If I keep one JD, could I keep larger bottom dwellers like pleco or bichir, or should the JD be the only fish in the tank like flowerhorns etc.

So it sounds like you don't have your tank yet. If you want to run a CA cichlid community, I'd suggest a bigger tank. A 180cm (~6') tank would be a much better choice. In the US, that would be a 125 (18" wide) or 180 (24" wide). I have a 180. If weight is a concern, get the 125.

The maximum length of the tank I can get is 120 cm. But I’m still a student and I won’t setup any other tanks for the next ten years. I just want a nice tank with lots of personality but without overstocking it. But if someone knows a community of fish including a JD which is suitable for that size of tank, I’d be glad if he shares it with me. I don’t have the goal to setup a Cichlid community tank, but those are tanks with lots of personality so that’s why it catches my eye. But if there are other communities with lots of personality, I’m open to any ideas.

I just did a little more research and I found I site where it says that you can keep them with tankmates with different coloration and shape so the JD doesn’t see them as concurrents. Of course he would probably be the tank boss, but he wouldn’t Harras the other fish constantly. I read about this on a few other sites too...

EBJD may get to 8" total length if you're lucky, but a regular JD will get over 10" total length easily within 5 years. Not all JD are personable. I find GT more personable than JD.

If you want fish with personality to recognize you and not be a solo fish, get a group of blood parrots (not dyed).
