I agree yours is not a female JD, my guess is, it may be part JD, but most likely, its a hybrid.
And people wonder why I rail against the creation of hybrids all the time.
If you like it its fine, but if you expected a JD well........
The store may have nbeen told its a JD too..

Like duanes said, that is not a JD, it may be a JD cross, but looks more like a Texas cichlid to me.

Great!! I mean I love the look of the fish ect.. but a hybrid isn't what i wanted and certainly not something I want to use for a breeding project. If may have to be a case of rehoming this guy and starting again

The easiest way is to get 6 juvenile JDs, and let nature take its course. It's a bit harder sometimes to get older fish to pair up without at times bad outcomes.

In the case of my EBJD he had a female was doing his thing and no luck. I gave him to Yankyjack and he has a mess of JDs, so he got to pick a girl and breed in days.

I also had a male and female convicts breed 10 days after I got them out of a tank with 20 other cons in it. Each cichlid is individual and you could get that male and go thru 1 to who knows how many females before you get some breeders.
