I would say it's a male, a dark colored female like yours would really be showing it's distinctive blue beard. Here is a female for comparison.

See all the blue under her eyes sweeping back to her gills.

Dempseys are easy once you figure it out. Just about the blue gills. A lot simpler than guessing based on profiles and finnage.

AFAIK and I've not checked lately, it has not been known how to sex RTC from external features. IDK about the hybrid but since the same holds for TSN, I'd guess it is not known either. The hybrid is supposedly sterile anyway, so normally who cares about its sex, except the females may and probably should grow bigger.

For larger RTC like over 2 feet, I have a supposition that females are bigger growing, girthier (the usual characteristic), and have flat and straight (in profile) heads while males' heads are a bit rounded.

Ty. I just picked up two more texas from cota that are 3”. Ones a male and the other was marked as female but not positive if its actually female yet. The one that was marked male and appears to be a male has some good looking color and tones imho. Heres a pic of him. I would recommend cota based on my experience and the quality of fish I got in the order.
